WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Neal Dunn (FL-02) issued the following statement after the House failed to pass H.R. 6136 - Border Security and Immigration Reform Act:

“I stand with President Trump in his efforts to strengthen our border security, stop illegal immigration, and close enforcement loopholes, while keeping immigrant families safe and together. Today we took a step in the right direction with the consideration of comprehensive immigration legislation. Unfortunately, our efforts were thwarted by Nancy Pelosi and House Democrats once again. It’s clear that our immigration system is broken, and I am committed to working with my colleagues in Congress and President Trump to address these issues.”

President Trump tweeted his support for the immigration legislation this morning stating, “HOUSE REPUBLICANS SHOULD PASS THE STRONG BUT FAIR IMMIGRATION BILL, KNOWN AS GOODLATTE II, IN THEIR AFTERNOON VOTE TODAY, EVEN THOUGH THE DEMS WON’T LET IT PASS IN THE SENATE. PASSAGE WILL SHOW THAT WE WANT STRONG BORDERS & SECURITY WHILE THE DEMS WANT OPEN BORDERS = CRIME. WIN!”

The legislation fulfills President Trump’s promise to increase border security, while keeping detained immigrant families together under the care of the Department of Homeland Security. It funds President Trump’s $25 billion request for strengthening border security, which includes funding for the wall, border technology, and border access roads and mobility. It also eliminates the visa lottery and reallocates 55,000 visas to a merit-based green card program.
