Washington, DC – Today, Congressman Neal Dunn (Florida-02) voted in favor of H.R. 9495, the Stop Terror-Financing and Tax Penalties on American Hostages Act, a bill that would provide tax relief to those who have been held hostage by terrorist organizations and suspend the tax-exempt status of any non-profit found to be materially supporting terrorist groups.
“Americans held by groups like Hamas have endured some of the cruelest treatment imaginable at the hands of terrorists. Unfortunately, when they return home after this horrific ordeal, many find that the IRS has issued substantial tax penalties and interest for tax bills that went unpaid during their captivity,” said Congressman Dunn. “Such bills put undue stress on those who are still recovering from the trauma of captivity. This legislation will give victims the peace of mind they deserve as they recover from the torment of their confinement.
"Moreover, the bill will also give the president power to strip the tax-exempt status of any non-profit found to be providing material assistance to terrorist organizations. There should never be any concern that a group enjoying tax-exempt status is supporting the very organizations that are imprisoning and terrorizing American citizens. I’m pleased that the House has passed this crucial legislation and hope the Senate will take it up without delay.”
